Internet telephony refers to communications - voice, fax, or voice-messaging applications - that are transported over a data network including the internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating a SIP telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression translation of the signal into internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.

Your SIP phone plugs into your computer and converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. You can make long-distance calls at less expensive call rates by removing some of the access charges required for use of the public telephone network. A user's physical location also becomes irrelevant

If you use a XPsip phone it connects through your broadband connection and allows you to make telephone calls using the internet. The XPsip phone converts the voice signal from the telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet and then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. When placing a call using a SIP phone you'll hear a dial tone and dial just as you would normally.

With XPsip, internet voice calls are transmitted directly to, and received directly from the internet. This direct connection creates fabulous savings, and provides for new powerful internet based phone features.

You won't hear any difference between calls made on the XPsip internet voice network and the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Networks); but you will notice huge savings, Free features and a telephone that adapts to your lifestyle.

IP telephony is not just about cheaper telephone calls; it is also about the delivery of newer and enhanced voice and data services, integration and collaborative computing. The integration of these combined voice and data services offers a wide variety of features that include sophisticated "follow-me" services, virtual PBX features, guest office support, and mobility and telecommuter support.

A properly planned and implemented network of IP Telephony connecting your branch offices can save you thousands of pounds in inter-office telecommunication costs.
